Default Custom true dual exhaust and trans crossmember

I have been kicking around the idea of doing a custom true dual exhaust system for my truck. It is a 2004 Silverado 1500 2wd reg cab short bed. The 5.3 has been swapped out for a LQ4 6.0l short block, with a set of 243 heads with a little port and polish work. Cam is a TSP 228r 3000 stall and a nnbs intake manifold. A bunch of other mods also. I was running a set of pacesetter long tube headers with their offroad y pipe. and a cat back exhaust I made using a magnaflow muffler dumped before the axle. It was LOUD. I have been wanting to quiet it down ever since I had it finished. I have searched and searched for pics of custom setups for ideas and also though about getting the speed engerining true dual set up but decided I wanted something custom. So I bought a trans cross member off ebay and some mandrel bends and started making my own set up. First I cut up the cross member to make room for the exhaust to run through. I decided to go with a h pipe for the difference in sound and ease of install compared to a x pipe. I used all three inch pipe 2 high flow cats and 2 dynomax ultra flow mufflers. It currently just has straight pipes coming off mufflers in front of axles because I ran out of pipe, but im going to run both over the axle to the stock location for a pair of tail pipes. Sound is way better than it was before a lot deeper tone with no rasp. It sounds a lot smother than with the y pipe. Still loud but way better than before. Should be perfect when pipes don't exit under the bed.

What size square tubing did you use and how thick is it?

It was 1 1/2 x 3 inch rectangular tube. I think it was .120 wall. Inch and a half fit nice and snug under the bolt sleeves in the factory crossmember ends I cut off.

Thank you. I ran true duals on my truck above the crossmember . And it is close to the crossmember . I think this will help get alittle more clearance.

I had thought about making the exhaust go over the cross member on both sides, but I didn't think I would have enough room. Also I think I would have needed more bends to get low enough to clear the drive shaft. The cross member is close to 7in tall taking out the middle gave a ton of room. My truck sits low, 3/5 drop. My cross member has never scraped the ground and the exhaust is still even a little higher than the cross member was.

Nice set up and pretty creative. Came out great, nice work.

What trans do you have?

You could sell copies of template for the cross member

Thanks! I'm running a 4l60e. I still have the template and the jig I used. Maybe I'll make another one with the spare crossmember I have.

Excellent work sir! I love seeing people take a basically **** design and turn it into what it should have been from the factory. I rerouted my Y pipe (custom made also) to behind the trans and under the tailshaft for easier servicing of the trans pan. There is tons of room under these trucks and it was utilized poorly by GM. Your design looks awesome.
