Default Cam Selection

I've narrowed down my choices for a new cam and would like your input. What would you choose and why?

My current cam is a Comp Cams with XE-R lobes, 220/224, .581/.581, 112 LSA, -2° overlap.

I'm looking to maximize midrange. A nasty idle is a must. I would also like a little more spring friendly lobe design.

See my signature for the details of my truck and engine.

Here are the cams I've narrowed it down to.

1. TSP 228/232, .600/.600, 112 LSA, 6° overlap.
2. TSP Torquer V2, 232/234, .600/.600, 113 LSA, 7° overlap.
3. TSP Stage 2 LS3, 229/236, .629/.615, 112 LSA, 8.5° overlap.
4. New Era Street Sweeper HT, 228/232, .600/.612, 111 LSA, 8° overlap.

Take this with a grain of salt,

I just pulled out an 11.5 overlap cam in favor of XR275HR. Why? More low-mid range.

With larger cams like that, you're going to give up the low end, no way around it. It'll pull nasty to the top of 3rd but off idle, you're going to be disappointed.

I would keep the cam you have, spec wise and do something on a 107-108 lsa. That'll be choppy while still maintaining the off-idle performance.

That's an interesting idea. The lower LSA should also increase my low/midrange. I'm only shifting at 6,100. I might raise that to like 6,300, but should still have plenty topend.

That would look something like 220/224, .600/.600, 108 LSA, 6° overlap.

What lobes still give good performance but are a little more spring friendly and quiet than XE-Rs?

PM stock48. He's the one that cuts cams this way.

Yes, it'll increase your bottom end and it'll still pull well.

Tightening the LSA is definitely the way to go. A little bit of both will do you well.

224/228 110+3 would have a hell of a mid range wallop but you will want a 3000+ converter. Softer lobes would probably let it spin to 6300 or so. 6* overlap would be heard at idle for sure.

That sounds like FTI Rebel-TQ cam. 224/228, .600/.600, 111.
