Another LS6 cam thread

02 LS6 cam in to an LM7

Does anyone have a DIY for cam install in a truck? (I've read the LS1 Camaro)

Injectors: stock or 24lb?

Tune: Necessary?

************

Reason for asking about injectors & tune:

The ultimate goal is a single turbo setup with 60lb injectors.

But first I want to do the cam/springs/headgaskets & studs & do not want to pay for a tune twice if its not necessary. I'm assuming it will be though.

Planning on 02 LS6 cam, LS9 headgaskets, LS7 lifters, hardened 7.4 pushrods & ARP hardware

you'll ask why I'm pulling the heads, I work at a dealer and the guys said its not that much more work & we might as well do the rest of the supporting mods while we're in the vicinity.

Cam change is gonna be the same as the f-fody except the engine is in a truck lol

Prob wont need a tune but it will run alot better with one..As far as tuning goes most tuners wont charge much if anything at all to retune but since your going FI it will prob be extra..

I was just curious about what all needs to come off the truck

You should just put some really good heads on it when you do the swap since you will have heads off anyway.

You don't need to pull the heads off to do a cam swap. At least I (and many other members ) didn't. Check out this LS1Howto.com.

Good luck.

edit, see that you are replacing the lifters. Yeah you need to pull the heads

Here are some pics of my son and I installing an 01 Z06 cam in his 4.8 Sierra.

https://www.me.com/gallery/#100052

The parts were about $150, so this was more for informational purposes.

It did run ok with the stock tune, but I did a full WB tune with HP Tuners on it.

The throttle response is amazing and the truck didn't lose any torque. It just comes on strong and rips to 6000 RPM much more freely. The 5-speed manual is a good match to this cam having very short gears. In fact, the biggest issue with the stock tune was the rev limiter shutting off the fun too early.

We have a GM Performance Touring exhaust installed and the idle sounds very much like a stock Z06 Corvette. The little pops on deceleration are cool too.

One day this will have a blower in it, but not with a 17 yr old behind the wheel.

+1, that's the guide I used for my swap :thumb:

How important is changing lifters and/orTuesday upgrading to ls7 lifters? Do far that's the most expensive part of this project

Mangled03gmc Sep 7, 2011 08:36 AM

They are not a must unless you have a ton of miles on yours now..
