Default Building a SBC for a Step side C10

and I need some combo insight. Here's what I have...

your standard "010" block (4 bolt main)
stock 3.48" stroke crank
stock rods and pistons
double hump heads

Is it possible to put a pontiac 400 crank in this block? I don't know if there are any conflicts with the bearing journal diameters or the snout / flange.

If the 400 crank is okay, can I retain the stock rods and pistons?

Please forgive the basic nature of the questions. 50 years of parts with slight variations now and then don't do much to help the learning curve.

While I guess anything is possible with enough machine shop work, a stock Pontiac crank will not fit into a stock 350 Chevy block.

No the pontiac crank is totally different. What you need if wanting to stroke it is a scat 3.750'' stroke 383 stroker crankshaft, or to turn down a chevy SB 400 crank to 350 sized main journals.

Thanks guys. I'll keep it simple and low cost with the factory crank.

Here's another question. I see that they sell re-ring kits without pistons for +.010 +.020 +.030 etc. Are they saying that the oversized rings can be used with factory pistons, or do I have to get oversized pistons as well? It seems like getting oversized pistons is a better idea, but if I can re-reing the factory pistons reliably, I'll do that.

If you bore out the cylinders, you need to use new pistons and rings to fit.

You need to take it to a machine shop and have them mic everything out, check bore pistons etc and go from there. If bore is within spec as well as pistons then you just need rings that fit your bore. If pistons are shot and bore is worn it's best to machine it out and order new oversized pistons and rings to size. On a those blocks you can usually take them out to + .060'' if you have to.
