6.2 Knocking sound in my 08 Yukon Denali, 140k miles

I'm getting a knocking like sound when the engine is cold but I can't pinpoint it. It doesn't sound like what you hear in typical youtube vids. Mine sounds more diesel engine like (very lightly like!!! I'd shit my pants if it sounded like a full on Cummins). I'm having a hell of time getting it recorded. No CEL, no loss of power, engine pulls just fine.

Rev in neutral [cold]: NO Knock

1-2-3 gear shift accelerating [cold]: Knock, but not when gears are shifting.

1-2-3 gear shift accelerating [hot]: Sounds normal!

Any ideas? Not engine but something in the drivetrain?

lol, kinda like this I guess

2012 Yukon XL Denali 6.2 cold start noise, camshaft & lifters repl - 1999-2006 & 2007-2013 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500 - GM-Trucks.com

My L9H non-AFM Sierra slaps pretty good when it's cold. It's bad enough that my 17 year-old daughter noticed in when she drove away one morning without letting it warm up. She calls me up and says, "I think something's wrong with the truck. It sounds like a diesel." I then proceeded to explain piston slap and tolerances.

It has 70k miles, does not use one drop of oil between changes, and quiets down after a few minutes. Remote start is great because we just start it five minutes (or more) before we plan to leave. I'm not worried about it. That truck and engine will probably outlive me.

Oil pressure cold is 40psi at idle, 25+psi warm FWIW. Oil change had no glitter.

Sorry for the string of replies, just posting as I see and remember things.

Piston slap just like this (hard to hear as well). I really don't care about the noise. I just don't want the engine to break down.

My guess would be piston slap, if it's only doing it on cold startup. I've heard of this problem before, just never encountered it! I'd just let the truck warm up before driving it! Should have a factory remote start on that thing!

The 6.2 seems reaaaally prone to piston slap. It ain't the end of the world. I'll just remote start or take it easy for the first 5 min or so.

Its piston slap, same reason i now have a 6.2 in my yukon... Just let it eat until it becomes ridiculous unless you just feel like honing and reringing the engine...

Next oil change put a bottle and a half of Lucas HD oil stabilizer in there, it will help the entire valve train stay quite.

Thanks all! Colder weather hit in this new to me Yukon, just learning her new sounds. I'll live with it no problem.

Colder hell, its just not a million degrees out... I am ready for some nice cool 30's and snow!!! It can stop raining any damned time now!!!
