What transmission upgrades are there available to this transmission. It does have a tow/haul mode. My buddy is just wanting to firm up the shifts. Has a 4.3 v-6 with some "pirate" mods and wants to get rid of the winnebago like shifts.

Depends on what you are looking to do. Is he just wanting quicker and firmer shifts? Better launch? How much power total is he making?
Tow/Haul raises part throttle shift points and add a crapload of line pressure.

Here's where I'd start:
TransGo shift kit for 4L60E - http://www.kdsperformance.com/tranhigpersh1.html
Some people also run the cheaper Corvette servo for slight gains over the stock intermediate servo. It seems that some trucks come with the Corvette servo and some do not. Here's the 'Vette servo link: http://www.kdsperformance.com/corser700r44.html
Billet Intermediate Servo - http://www.kdsperformance.com/supser700r44.html
Billet OD Servo - http://www.kdsperformance.com/ovsupser704l.html
If you use the billet servos with the TransGo, do not install any of the three washers in the 1-2 accumulator, the 1-2 shift will be a bit annoying after about a week or so (like me!). The servos make a huge difference in the quality and tightness of the upshifts and downshifts.
I have the full TransGo kit and both billet servos and I really am amazed how differently the 4L60 now performs with just that installed...and I still have TqMgt on my PCM!

I heard that using a billet servo would make the shifting really harsh, is that true? Or does that have something to do with those 3 washers? What do the washers do?

The billet servos can shift insanely hard on the 1-2 depending on the washers.
Lemme put it this way: I have both servos, full TransGo, ONE washer in the 1-2 accumulator, full TqMgt, and can easily bark the 285/75R16 AT's on there on a WOT upshift!
While this may sound cool, the part throttle 1-2's are a bit much with the servos and one washer.
I am going back on the lift next Wednesday to get that washer taken out, I just don't feel like having a broken trans on a stock truck!
When I pull the washer from the 1-2, my shifts will be back to how the 2-3 shift is with the billet servos...which is about perfect for me. They will be a bit softer at part throttle and harder as the RPMs increase.

No, I sold it the same day I removed it for $100. I bought it used for $160 so i didn't see it as too much of a loss. I bought a clear smoked UPD but haven't put it in yet.
Will any transmission shop make this kind of install? What should I look for when looking for a shop to install a shift kit and some servos?
