I bought this 5.3 two months ago, but just got around to checking bottom end. This is what I seen...

Is this normal???

There also was a small amount of water in oil pan as you can see..

What do you guys think?

I've seen a few 5.3 sludge monsters before. If no major rust anywhere it should be fine with a good cleaning. Hot tank it or use lots of oven cleaner to get that stuff off.

I don't know yet. I was planning on swapping it until I seen that... I have not tore down the top end. It just looks burned up

I was planning on using it in a swap, but I don't believe I'll use it now. I also have a 4.8. I will take the oil pan/tray off tomorrow and post pics of how it looks...

Eh, if it's not all rusty and the cylinder walls cleaned up good I'd run it no worries.

Toss some transmission fluid in for a couple thousand miles and it'll break it down along with synthetic oil.

I’d get some brake clean and clean the oil pan out on the 5.3 and make sure there’s no metal debri in it. More than likely what happened with the 5.3 is it sat up for a while and water got in through the intake ports... any time i take a motor out and it’s gonna be hanging around outside, I always loosen the rocker arm bolts so the valves close. Either way, both motors had horrible service life!!!

Both of those look like early motors. Likely EGR motors and bad/early PCV design.

But agreed not serviced often enough.

Check for cracked cylinder heads around the head bolt bosses under the valve covers. If you pull a valve cover and it looks like peanut butter in there you found the bad head.
