transmission in a 1996 tahoe

My transmission died in my 1996 chevy tahoe 4x4.What year trucks can I get one out of?I was told by the junk yard I talked to said I can only get it out of a 96-97 but they didn't no why.Does anyone no for sure if this is true or can I get it out anouther year?I am looking just to put used one in the truck.

thanks
Dennis

The reason why they said that is because I believe the case in the 98 and later units changed. I believe that the trans in your truck is what I would consider a one piece case. Meaning that the bell housing is not removable. In 96 they changed the solenoids on the valve body so that is why you would need the two years mentioned. HTH Vince
