Personally i like to see my tranny always stay a little cooler than engine jacket water temps, but without an additional cooler after the integrated one thats in your rad it won't happen under various driving conditions. Good thing you bought the oversize cooler, a cool transmission is always a happier transmission If you still have problems keeping the heat down you can always add a deep pan, preferably cast aluminum with finning, for the the best heat transfer. This will also just provide with additional fluid to be circulated through the trans, prolonging the service interval and increased rigidty of the whole unit, not as though the whole case usually fails.

How long are you driving it in town for? Hills? I don't believe that it matters which one is in or out, I know I have the exact same cooler and I didn't pay attention to that. Your highway temps seem fine. City seems a little high but I don't believe that it will damage anything. you could always get a small, stand alone electric fan to mount on it.

Over 225 and I start getting worried as the heat usually starts building up pretty quickly, especially when the truck is loaded up. Heat kills transmissions, and even more so for the 4L60E as these things can break easily under stock power levels.

I have included this chart...
