Trans issues or just tuning?
#1
I bought an 06 Max with only 11000 miles on it and absolutely love it. I have noticed that this transmission seems sluggish sometimes, has hung in first gear before, and most of the time shifts perfectly fine. When I baby the thing it seems like the thing will shift weird on occassion. Is this just what everyone calls terrible factory tuning or am I already having trans problems. The fluid looks good and I am really watching it closely now so maybe I am just being paranoid. Any good answers? Also, what trans is in my truck? From what I have read I guess its a 4L60E? Thanks

You have a 65E, it's a little stronger than the 60E (has 5 pinion planets as opposed to 4 for the 60E). My trans always seemed inconsistent to me, from day 1 and even after PCM tuning. I drove tdrumm's truck after he installed an FLT Level5 and was very happy with how much better that it performed than stock, and very consistent in how it reacted. My guess is that you're experiencing the factory tuning. A shift kit combined with the proper tuning would make a world of difference.

Okay. Thanks for the response! I am going to get a tune from Wheatley here shortly and drive this trans until it dies and then get a FLT. My buddy just put one in his TBSS and it is great!!

Even a 4L65E can certainly use some improvement. If the shifting is inconsistent, I'd dump the pressure control junk, and switch to a vac mod setup. Coincidently, those have caused me GREAT HEADACHE (& carnage). Your PCM looks for a certain pressure level given throttle position (and other factors) to grant the wish of shifting gears. If the correct pressure level (per the table) isn't met, it won't shift. Hopefully, your RPMs aren't too high when the pressure requirement is satisfied. Otherwise, the PCM will tell the trans to shift, and the trans will jam right into gear. I've broken forward sprags that way (and other stuff too).
If you want a reliable performer, swap that trans out with an FLT (or other site sponsor).
Or you can do what I did, and upgrade the internals yourself.
