Default tow/haul button??

ok im gonna be towing my other truck and have a quick question.

i have a 4x4 silverado and has the tow/haul button. I should keep this button on when i tow correct and i shouldnt let the truck go into overdrive when on the freeway so keep the tow haul button.

i have the escalade gauges on my truck so i can see tranny temp. what i would do is just keep my eye on it so i could tow in overdrive to keep gas mileage ok but if its bad for the tranny i dont want to do that. Ill be on straight flat land. Highway 5 from san francisco to LA so pretty much straight and flat.
