Default Finished the 8-lug swap

Tonight I performed the G80 conversion...otherwise known as the G-80-Pieces conversion. Tomorrow I start pulling it out and swapping in a Hummer 14-bolt rear axle assembly, the strongest 8-lug semi float axle GM ever made.

Pictures to follow.

Are you going run mismatched lugs or do you have a plan for converting the front?

Some people take the G80 apart with tools, others with horsepower. Both work!

Im taking a wild guess that there is no way to use 8 lug hubs on the 1500 front suspension... Wouldn't you have to swap out spindles, arms, and all? Which also means different mounting points?

Was planning to convert the front to 8-lug via adapter since I'm going dually on the rear in the near future (yes, I'm crazy lol).

I've been looking at the 2500 Suburban front suspension, I think it could work with some modifications. But the adapter would be a lot easier.

The hummer swap is super straight forward.

You will need to relocate the lower shock mounts (welding required) or use a shock with upper and lower eyelets.

Easiest if you have the hummer brake lines, but Tahoe/Suburban ones will work with some massaging.

Parking brake will require a hybrid of hummer ends with your current cable on the frame. Not difficult, but not terribly easy to do without the appropriate crimper.

Other than that, I am running front end adapters. After reading numerous failed threads on attempted 2500 front conversions, I wanted something that simply worked vs having my truck down for a month or 2 while I did R&D to finish the 2500 swap.

Only 1 swap has been completed that I know of to date.

You can use 2500 spindles with hubs on the front. I have a friend that did so. It was lowered but he couldn't get the alignment perfect. On a normal ride height you may be able to adjust it within spec or use an offset upper bushing.

The 2500 arms will not bolt up to a 1500. I looked into it already. The 2500 lower arms are longer and the upper arm mounting points are further apart.

Are you talking about a 2500, or 2500HD. I have always wondered this. Maybe look at 1500HD spindles??

Some progress. Got the old rear out and started swapping parts over to the H2 rearend. Figured I'd order some suspension bushings and replace everything while I was there. I pulled the control arms off and made a gruesome discovery, one side was a bit tweaked top and bottom and the panhard bar wasn't true either. Right now I'm seriously considering getting Spohn bars instead of stock ones again.

Interesting. So is this pretty much a direct swap? It looks like the same basic suspension set up. Is the track width the same? I also have a SUV with the same 4 link style rear end.
