Here's 4 photos of the pattern I got after final assembly with a new ring and pinion.
GM 10-bolt 8.5 (09+), 3.42 gears.
It really has a whine to it.
The diff was running pretty cool. (70F over ambient after a 15-min highway drive (end of break-in cycle).
I tightened the pinion bearing as much as I dared, and it started to run a little hotter (maybe 80F over ambient for a highway trip) but whined the same.
I'm pretty well convinced that one of the following is true:
1. I did the gear setup wrong? please help me by looking at the gear pattern below, and tell me if I'm dumb.
- 5 thou in or out on the pinion were both obviously wrong on the pattern. (straight line half-moon at bottom of drive side, or only touching top of coast side)
2. I somehow got a bad bearing set on the pinion.
3. I bought a cheap gearset, and they are inherently noisy.
Can someone smarter (or at least less angry at the moment) please help me out, and tell me if the patterns below look reasonable?
I have a new set of bearings/ seals coming.
Should I go ahead and buy a new ring and pinion from a reputable manufacturer? Or is the pattern below wrong enough that it explains a whine?
The hollow spot in the middle of the contact on the coast side seems odd. But I don't know if it's a problem.
