Default overfilled my rear end?

about a month ago I installed a TA cover for my rear end. My rear end guy said I would need about 3 qts of gear oil. The TA cover adds another 1/2 qt capacity. I used 85/140 gear oil & put 4 qts in along with a bottle of limited slip additive. I usually drive the truck short distances only, like 5-10 mins each way, & have never had a problem...until last weekend.

I drove it to Showfest, about 4 hrs one way. I noticed that I smelled gear oil at the rear of the truck. I looked underneath & everything is coated with it. It looks like it was spraying out at the pinion seal.

Did I overfill the rear end & that's what caused the oil to spray out? Is it OK to leave it alone under the assumption that whatever amount sprayed out is because it was overfilled?

Any help is greatly appreciated

yeah the title is alittle funky.

to the op

you might have blown out the seal from over filling it, clean everything off real good, and keep a eye on it. (check fluid level, and make sure it doesnt run out of oil) if it still leaks, the seal is fubar.

I thought y'all would like that

The truck has 18K miles. I had a TrueTrac & 4.10s put in about 3 months ago. I think the guy that did the work replaced all the seals, but even if he didn't, the truck only has 18K miles, I wouldn't think they need replacing yet.

I'm running conventional 80-90 with no additive in mine. It's not needed.

Yeah, I didn't think the limited slip additive was needed either but wasn't 100% sure. I figured it wouldn't hurt so I added it.

So, with the TA cover, was 4 qts overfilling it?

Drain it out and just put gear oil in it with no addative.. I have heard ppl having problems with their true trac peg legging with a addative in there

I'm pretty sure 4qts was overfilling it. Use the stock diff fill hole the next time you fill it and use the paper clip method to get the right fill level. I think the level needs to be 5/8ths of an inch below the fill hole, not positive though, consult your owners manual. The fill hole on the diff cover is way too high.
