Is the intermediate shaft not a weak point? I've read the intermediate and output shafts are not really problem areas but who knows what to believe on the interwebz

If you lock your converter at WO then the stock input is a weak point. I have not heard of issues with the output on 4x4 but I am not sure about 2wd as its longer I believe.

Jake says the stock intermediate shaft is good to at least 1200 hp. I've yet to hear of anyone that broke one.

He does consider it imperative to upgrade the input shaft over 750, although I know some on here have pushed the stock one further, it's better to upgrade it than have to pull the trans later IMO.

Atomic borke his input shaft right?

Also in am no expert but i believe most 80es have a 34 element sprang, does adding 2 more really make it that much stronger?

Yes, the 36 element is a hybrid of parts from a couple different transmissions to make on for the 80E. Even he 34 element is one of the weak points. The sprag takes allot of abuse.

Strange..... Besides atomic. Who on here has recently broke a non-stock 80?

The stock input survived for 3 years with radials, it broke the second time I went to the track with slicks, sooooo....

In mine it now has the billet input and forward hub, always had the rollerized rear, and billet intermediate and thats all I think.

Really good info guys. From what I've read, the 91-96 cores come with a larger OD roller clutch with a 16 element sprag instead of the 34 element..? Jake states on his site that he prefers the early core for that reason in high horsepower builds. Does that mean that he takes the larger roller clutch and puts a 34 element sprag in his builds that don't get the upgraded 36 element?

Looks like this unit is also a 91-96. I'm going to start tearing it down and ordering some goodies for it. Wish me luck.
