junk yard sourced 4l80e inspection
I've pulled a 2000 4l80e out of a wrecked 2500 truck to swap into my 1500 truck. since i don't know the mileage of the new-to-me trans, i've pulled out all the pink parts to inspect it. things i've found:
1. trans fluid nice red color and smells "normal"
2. none of the clutches and steels look abnormally worn or blued
3. all thrust washers and bushing don't seem to have a lot of wear either.
4. relatively clean inside the trans
5. where the check ***** sit - they seem to have wallowed out a wider spot in the valve body (trans case side)
6. forward clutch has plastic thrust washer
what i don't know- the lining material thickness- i can't find how thick the lining material is supposed to be on the clutches or the band. what else should i be looking for? I don't see any major wear anywhere.
i have the atsd book but i didn't see min thickness for lining, the book also didn't have any inspection criteria like i was hoping it would. guidance is appreciated.
what i know i'll be installing in the trans regardless- transgo hd2 kit *full kit since the trans is torn down, actuator repair kit and those fancy imidized check *****- since i didn't like the way the steel ***** beat up the aluminum.

apparently the specs for inspecting the trans are in the assembly section of the manual i have. I figured you'd want to inspect the parts upon dissasembly so you know what parts to order for re-assembly. not to happy with the order in which this astg book is laid out.
oh well. we are all learning right?

had another look at the forward clutch housing assembly and i have clutches that are missing all their friction material. missed that the first time around.
now i'm looking for a stock rebuild kit with borg warner friction material. any good sources for complete diy kits?

UPDATE: trans rebuild/swap is finished. went with an ebay rebuild kit, imidized check ***** and actuator repair kit. installed a 32 spline input shaft, a new chain and a billet pump in my np246 transfer case. front duramax shaft worked perfect, custom 5" rear driveshaft. drives great. now lifters are making noise. now to tear down the engine.
