Hydroboost with Rack and Pinion

Is it possible to have hydroboost with rack and pinion? I have a 88-98 C1500 that I'd like to do rack and pinion with my hydroboost setup to cut some wait but also maintain good driving characteristics. I don't mind changing spindles/control arms to get the right geometry if I can get it all to work and cut some weight.

Thanks!

Can't imagine how a steering gear would care, or even be able to tell, what was assisting the brakes.

As far as putting a R&P on the older truck though, can't help you there.

I put hydroboost on my 2000 with R&P steering. Only issue is the pump whines a bit after the third autocross run each heat. It only has the stock steel ps cooler up front and I didn't start doing autox till after the hydroboost install so it may have even done it without hb. I believe a better cooler will solve that issue though.

I may try it then. I've heard that the pressures may cause some seal leakage issues, etc. But it may be fine!

Power steering pump pressure is the same. What changes is the regular pump has 2 hook up points, pressure and return. The HB pump has 3 points with i believe 2 being returns.

I put hydroboost brakes on my 2012 (that comes with a steering rack) but only vac option for 1500.
didnt change PS pump, just used stock line for a HB truck from pump to brake booster, and joined lines from rack to brake booster.

what is the concern - the PS pump putting out to much pressure for a rack?

That's what I've been reading that the pressure was more for hydroboost.

Interesting...I've read that Hydroboost had more pressure so if its the same pressure then it should work.

I did the conversion with a rack on my 2000. I started by T-ing into the PS pump. Was having issues with the brakes dragging after driving for awhile and heating them up. I never found out the source as I replaced the MC and the PS pump at the same time under parts warranty. I’ve since moved to the PS pump for hydro boost with the return line. I installed a small transmission cooler in place of the tiny PS cooler and replaced the lines with AN braided hoses. There are no leaks from extra pressure. What I did notice was that braided brake lines and good quality sealing bleeders on the calipers are a MUST.

another thing to note about the pressure is that GM mostly used just one or two Siginaw style PS pumps for hydro boost for the past 30 years... there are many different truck, van configurations with rack and steering gear, 2500, 3500, etc... all applications vary. So what you need to do if the pressure isn’t right for your truck(ie usually felt when brakes are slightly pulsing or idle surging, while making sharp turns in parking lots on the brakes), you will need to shim or change the spring in the releif valve located inside of the PS pump. You can do a google search and find some good info strictly about this valve and all the different configurations GM used. I had to change mine back from my old pump into the new one to get rid of the slight pulsing effect in parking lots.

What rack kit are you using for the 88-98 truck?
