Front axle bearings?
My truck has had a vibration in the steering for the last year or so, only when turning slightly to the left. Last year I took it in to the dealer for this and they replaced the right side wheel bearing (under warranty), the problem didn't go away. I thought it may be the tires causing it.
Over the winter I didn't notice it much. Now this spring it's started to do it again, plus there is a scraping/grinding noise at low speed (less then 40km/hr) at a rate of one tire revolution, and its not the brakes. I found a post over on fullsizechevy, that described the same scraping/grinding noise, and it turned out to be the axle bearings in the front diff. I just checked my axles for play, and the drivers side has at least 0.100" of movement, and the right side has hardly any movement. Has anybody else had this problem? |
Just a wild guess here, and I mean wild, but could/would it maybe be the universal joints. Maybe there is some sort of free play in them causing noise.

Well I found the problem, its the left wheel bearing. I had the truck jacked up and when I spin the left wheel it makes the rumble, rumble noise. So I took the brakes off and pulled the cv shaft out to pinpoint the noise down to the wheel hub. I tried pulling the abs sensor out to check the condition of the grease, but the sensor broke off inside the hub, so now I need a wheel sensor and a hub.
I was hoping it was the axle bearings, they may be harder to change but I'm sure there cheaper then a $300 wheel hub :( . |
