Diff Case Spreader...
...do you need one to install a trutrac into our 10 bolt rears?
|
I tried to install mine without one. I ended up breaking the shims trying to get everything hammered back in. I built a case spreader with some 1/2" allthread, 1 1/4" box steel and bolts that I ground to fit in the holes of the case. Worked like a champ.

I didn't use one and everything lined up ok. Might be good to have access to one though just in case.

I worked for gm for 15 years and never used a case spreader on a 8.6. I have probably built 100+ 8.6 rear axles and never had a problem. With the trutrac you can usually reuse the original shims in there original location. Be sure to check you're backlash before you take it apart and make sure its the same when you're done, if you're reusing the ring and pinion.

Good to know...I don't have one and plan to do a trutrac eventually when I do my trans...

Deffently easier with, but not needed....

Mine went in no prob, had to tap the shims a tad, but nothing drastic by any means :)

Usually you can start the shims by hand when they get 25 to 50 percent in, you should have to tap them.

ive done 20-30 rear ends and never had to use one. as long as everything is lined up straight nothing should break
