No this is not another 80e I broke . THe unit I just rebuilt is doing well. This is a 2005 unit from a gmc savana/ chevy express (I forget) i picked up a while back.

Here is the carrier assembly/sun gears. Look how the sun gear's teeth were completely worn off.

The accumulators were totally melted.

THe internal wiring harness/plastic on the solenoids were melted as well. Look at the pigtails for the solenoid. The pic doesn't really show it but the connectors the pigtails connect to were melted at an angle. The unit obviously saw extreme temperatures.

Just curious how the hell this would happen. THis was behind a stock 4.8 or 6.0. The van had to be carrying a crap load of HVAC crap. Any guesses on how this crapshoot went down?

plugged cooler? barely getting any flow thru it and just over heated?

Thought the PCMs were set to go into reduced power or HOT mode above 264*?

Ouch that got hot. Make sure you flush and flow check that cooler before you install the trans. A lot of the converters on the newer 80's are coming apart and clogging coolers.

It usually starts by not doing regular Fluid and filter changes. Once things start heating up and parts start breaking down its to late...

Probably running down the freeway hauling a load is what finally did it in. Its usually because they figure well if I can just get home or back to the shop, I will worry about it then...

Yeah I thought the vehicle would've gone in limp mode but maybe the temperature sensor was clogged with debris so it didn't get an accurate reading.

this is not the trans from my truck. I am just building this one. Good point though. I have a stack of 4 stockers (1 I never used) and 1 aftermarket.

Haha lmao! You nailed it as far as what the guy did. IIRC he said he was coming back from Barstow. He said the van started to act funny and he didn't want to pull over in the hot sun.
