Default Carb engine in a 96 1500

I have a 1996 Chevy 1500 with a carbureted 350 out of a 77 1500. What transmission should I put in it? Th400? I want to run no computer. I don’t care much about having no overdrive. Will I have problems with my driveshaft being to short? I’m trying to do this on a budget.

A good Th400 is about as dummy proof as it gets, super strong and always reliable. Pick the right torque converter and it'll work awesome.

I'd suggest installing the transmission, then seeing if you need a longer driveshaft.

The Th400 is shorter than a 4L60e, so it seems likely.

I’m putting it in a single cab. Do you think if I took a driveshaft from an extended cab it would make up the length difference?

The TH400 has three different output/tail shaft lengths whether it's 4wd or 2wd. The 2wd output shafts are either 9 1/4", 15", or 18 1/2" depending on the application. The long 18" tailshaft 400's came in large family sedans like Impala/Caprice, Bonneville's, Delta 88's and Cadillac Coupe/Sedan Devilles etc. So your driveshaft length will be dictated by the 400's tailshaft length.

Default 700r4

The 700r4 should fit perfect correct? I’m thinking about going with it because I don’t think I would have to chance my driveshaft.

It won't hold much power. A 400 would. I had a GMC Jimmy with a 700 and a shift kit but it probably didn't weigh maybe 33-3700? Smog 350 motor with a 150 shot ran high 7's many yrs ago. I would do it right the first time.
