Default Can you drill a hole and insert a heli-coil in a center carrier housing?

If you have a small hole with no crack in your cast iron differential carrier housing, can you drill it out, add a heli-coil then insert a pipe fitting?

Thanks,

Joe

Can't you just tap the housing without the heli-coil?
