Build a 4L60E for 500+rwhp (Ultimate Parts List)

Just like the title says. I want to do this during my little winter vacation, and I want to do it right. Basically I have a little bill of materials going, but for certain parts I research, I get conflicting answers/opinions.

I know I'll need quite a bit of parts and quite a few are a given (servos, transgo, etc), but I want your guys' opinions/experiences with the following. I'd also like to get a bad ass parts list posted too. :D

Band: There are several performance bands out there. I figure the kevlar band is the bare minimum, but what about the new carbon ones?
What about a wider band with the corresponding drum.

Clutches: Everybody talks about the Alto cluthes, but are there any out there better?

3-4 clutches: Some go with the z-pack, 13 single sided clutches. Some go with a number a little higher than stock, but sacrifice by using thinner steels. Some use the stock amount but just better material. What do you think would be the best?

5 pinion planetaries: Front or rear? Front and Rear? Which? People say the OEM's are the only way to go as the other's are foreign. Has anyone broke a non OEM one, like TCI's for example?

Sun shell: the beast? which one?

Hardened input shaft/drum: I assume this WILL be needed.

Is there a hardend output shaft available? I know this is a weak spot. Anything else of great importance? What about stronger sprags?

I've busted a non-GM 5 pinion front planetary all the way across with a mild na 350 in a silverado. This was when they first came out and no one knew they were lesser quality. The place I bought them from no longer sells the imported stuff.

this is a good pictorial of a 700r4 rebuild and parts suggestion list.

There are 4340 output shafts avaliable. I think it's overkill for most. I'd get hardened or cyro every hard part.

Sun shell kit: 24229853
Reaction carrier: 24227002
Input carrier: 24218063
Clutch set: RCPBP-15
Band: RPS77700
Servo: K012
Servo: K034
Boost valve: 77898E-K
Valve body kit: K4L60E-L
Input drum/shaft: 24217527
Forward roller clutch: 24210961
Output shaft: 24217529 or 24230982

that's a pretty good list to get you started.

Copy paste that I send everyone that ask me about my tranns

$40 - 29 element sprag
$50 - Alto Forward & Low/Rev clutches
$20 - Alto 2-4 Band
$65 - Alto 3-4 clutch pack, full thickness clutch and steels
$60 - Billet OD servo
$40 - Input Drum reinforcement kit
$10 - Aluminum accumulator pistons
$35 - Beast reaction shell
$15 - TransGo plate
$115 - HD reaction carrier shaft
$25 - High RPM 3-4 spring pack
$7 - Hardened Pump rings
$130 - all new solenoids and harness (except EPC dont need as you go vac)
$15 - Sonnax check valve

$170-420 - hardened or billet output shaft
$90 - Vac modulated Shifts

This is a list of what you would need pretty much. Get a transgo hd-2 shift kit vette servo and a billet od servo if you plan WOT 4th gear shifts. I got a hardened shaft and it seems to be taking the torture of offroading with 33's. Oh and a big azz tranny cooler heat is the main enemy. If you really dont want to have anything to worry about get the 5 pinion planetaries get factory gm ones not aftermarket I know it sounds weird but the factory ones are powdered metal and they are much stronger than aftermarket. My tranny cooler is a 40,000 gcvw and it keeps it nice and cool(150*). Vac shift stuff is if you want to do away with the EPC solenoids which controls line pressure(ie shift firmness) you replace it with a ford C4 unit me personnally I wouldnt do this cause you have to run a vacuum line and all that bs. Let me know if you have any questions. The prices are approximate. I got my stuff from 4l60-e.com.

Easy, you use the Master Rebuild Kit. Part# 4L80E ;) :D :jest:

Zippy, where are these part #'s too? Are they GM pn's? If so, I don't think they'll withstand 500rwhp in a 5000lb truck. :emb:

Cody, are ALL those parts from 4l60-e.com? I've looked around there before, and I don't remember them having all that stuff.

Grippy......funny, real funny. :moon: :)

Anyway, it looks like you've all agreed on OEM planetaries, but both front and rear?

I just looked at 4l60-e.com and they sell rebuilt OEM 5 pinions for a decent price. I wonder if those are worth a shit?

I was thinking about buying the Hughes rebuild kit for the non-hard parts:

HP3789
"This Premium Race Kit features Kolene® steels, ‘Red’ Alto® race frictions, and a Kevlar lined race band."
http://store.summitracing.com/largei...rt=HUP-HP3789K
They advertise it like its a complete rebuild kit, with all the little seals and what not. They're local, so I might drop by and pick their brains. :D

let us know what all it includes and what you end up with

Call them they have all that stuff a couple of things are a bit different. Those are the planetaries I bought from them and they have withstood full bolt 3000 stall 4wd launches with a 100 shot and lots of offroading/towing and beating the hell out of them. The hardest shift for them is the 4 to 1 downshift and I hit it with all that power and the juice so like 420rwhp and like 460 rwtq in 4wd so no spinning in my5400-5600# turd and they have taken it without glitch so far and I will truely test them with the 418:devil:

FYI all those parts cost me about 1600 or so from them:(

With this setup work when you're under boost? I have no clue what this is/does. Is it similar to what's on my TH350 in my car?

Oh BTW, Hughes makes a 10"-12" hybrid 'verter. It's basically a 10" 'verter with a 12" lockup clutch/piston. I'm going to look into this. :D

1slow01Z71 11-14-2005 10:50 PM

Its C4 module that is put in the trans and instead of your pcm telling it when to shift the vac off the engine does. I believe it works like the th350. Not a real tranny expert as far as that goes I havea guy I call when I have ?s:D
