hey guys i have some questions about switching from a 3.42 to a 3.73 gear


this is my truck and mods :07 NNBS Rcsb 5.3

i haven ran my truck at the track since i installed the headers , i know it feels stronger but every one i race that has a better gear than me is ******* me off the line this
gear sucks *****,money is a little tight right now but i already started saving i should be ready in a couple months.

but i wanna know how much this is gonna Cost me For The Parts and Installation.

and does anyone know of a good mechanic or shop in Houston that can install the gears for me.

and what exactly is the procedure.. do i just swap out the ring and pinion or do i need a whole new rear end (excuse my ignorance) thanks in advance

$400-$600 plus differential of your choice.

in other words. check your local shops. the gear is going to be under $200 for whatever size you want. the rest of the cost is going to be labor and that's going to be based on the shops in your area.

do you guys think it will be a big diffrence down low , how will it be on the highway what would 2nd gear top out at ? right now (with 3.42) it's just around 97

search around in the southern section on here to find shops around Houston. That's came up alot lately. As far as the procedure. They just take your gears out and put the new ones in.

Edit: The larger the gear, the better you are down low. really helps city driving. As for your shifting, that's going to depend on your tire size.
In the top of this section you'll find a sticky for calculating gear/mph/shift points. there's a calculator in there that will help.

To be honest. if your going to spend the money to change them. get 4:10's. good to have the towability and it doesn't hurt fuel economy as much as you'd think.
I'm fixing to get some 4.11's put in when i get around to it.
you'll notice some difference going 3.42 to 3.73 but 4.10 will give you the advantage over the people you've been losing to.

i havent really been losing i catch up and pull really hard around 40 and up right after i shift out of 1st (50mph) i just said **** it ill be a lot faster if i had a better gear the only thing is now if a change the gear is

all those 3.73's that bust me off the line i kill then on the highway lol

If I were doin it I would go ahead and get a good LSD while I was in there... most lsd's are around 350-500
