yea its just the longer gear ratio of the 80e added with the high 3.23s doesn't help. 3.73s with a nice 3600 converter will help a lot. U just need to swap the gear already!!

To answer your original question, I would get 4.10s minimum.
I was running 3.73 behind my 383 Stroker with a 4l60e but switched to 4.10 when I swapped in the 4l80e. Made up for the long 1st gear...just turns about 200 rpm more at highway speed.

You guys realize that the 4l80e has the same first gear as a stock TH400 right?

I am running 4.56s and a 29" tall tire on my Express. Gets the big heavy pig rolling nicely from a stop and puts the 218/228 cam I have in it at a nice 2,800 rpm @ 70. When I want to pass, I just roll on the pedal and it effortlessly picks up speed even without downshifting. Its even more noticeable when I have my 6,000 lbs Jayco behind it.

It just cracks me up because we are all basically using the most powerful 300-400 cubic inch motor gm has ever made and bitching about a 2.48 first gear.

The 2.48 first gear in GM automatics has been around since what, the early 60's?

I don't know, its just funny to hear most talk about a swap from 4l60e to 4l80e is stupid cause it makes your car/truck "a total dog off the line". I'd be willing to bet that most of the cars/trucks featured on these forums (they aren't stock) would show little to no improvement in 60' performance going from a 4l80e to a 4l60e in a back to back test. If you have the right combo of torque converter, rear gear/tire.....the 2.48/1.48/1.00 gear set will likely be better on the track and the street than the 3.06/1.63/1.00 gear set.

Flame on........

Lol! Not flaming but I think the things guys bitch about is a 2.48 first gear in a 3200 pound car isn't as big of a problem as a 5000+ pound truck... The LS motors make great power but I think can be a little soft on the bottom end especially when cammed.. The higher power band combined with the heavy weight is what makes it more noticeable in a truck.. Stall is a must, mines going in as we speak. My .02
