Default 8.6" rear fluid capacity?

I read today that the fluid capacity on the rear is 2.1 quarts. Is this correct?

I seem to remember that the last time I changed the fluid it took nearly 3 quarts. Did I overfill the rear? Any consequences of doing so, like the fluid foaming up or anything?

Has to be about that...I put 2 in all of my 8.5"-8.6"s 2 and you can touch the fluid through the fill plug so I quit there.

If you overfilled it (not sure how you could it would be pouring out the fill plug), I would think you would risk the seals in the housing ends leaking easily. Foaming wouldn't be an issue, the ring gear runs through the oil anyway.

2 qts sounds about right with the stock cover. most aftermarket ones hold more. i agree with the above post though, how can you overfill it without it pouring out the drain hole. I mean if you question the amount of fluid in it just pull the fill plug, stick your finger in there, and see where the level is. you should be able to touch the fluid with out it pouring out

Be sure to manipulate the valve on the end of the breather hose if there is one.

IIRC 2 will do it, I just fill until I can reach in with a finger and feel the level just under the fill hole.

To aid filling I warm up the lube a bit in some hot tap water, and slide a hose over the bottles nozzle/top after Ive cut the top off. Then I just slide the hose in the dif. fill hole. invert the lube bottle and squeeze away.

Synthetic lube after 1998 correct?
