4l80e vs 4l60e
 
anyone know the length difference between a 2wd 99 4l60e and a 2wd 4l80e?

can I use a 96-00 (non LS truck) 4l80e in a 99-up ls motor application? I know the bellhousing has a top center bolt on the newer transmissions but was wondering if there were any other obvious differences I am missing? 5 bolts holding my trans in would be just fine w/me...

About 5/8 of an inch.

You can use the older 96-99 style just need the correct flywheel and spacer from a 6.0L/4L80E. Not sure if the converter bolt patern is different between the years.

The differences are mostly internal.

Thank you, that's what I am planning to do on the flywheel, apparently three of the 6 TC bolts wont even line up with the 5.3/4l60 flywheel. Got some info from a rebuilder, I guess I can use as early as a 94 and that 94-96 have a better sprag bearing than newer ones. Bell housing will only have 5 bolts that line up but the Neutral safety switch provision and long shifter shaft and bracket bolts are there unlike 91-93 models. He also stated that a van trans may have a fully splined output shaft so i can use a fully splined slip yoke, otherwise I may simply need the counterbored th400 type yoke if the splines stop short. Found a 18K mile used rebuilt 95 Van transmission for $340 so hopefully I am on the way to saving some money on this project as well.

The early ones had lubrication issues from what understand. I am not sure on the exact years affected but from what I understand that is the reason they moved from the lines being right next to each other on the early one similar to the 4L60e to having the return line moved to the rear bearing support.

Maybe some one with more knowledge will chime in.

Yep earlier ones had some lube issues as Joe said with location of the lube lines,

You roughly have to offset back the crossmember 2'' when an 80e swap is installed in a 99-up silvy. Thats what mine was anyway along with many others.

You can also get a 4l80E converter with an LS / 60 e front bolt pattern to ease installation if you go aftermarket. Thats what i had precision industries make for me.

Ive read the 12oclock bolt hole doesnt really matter, but i still went with an LS bellousing 80e out of an 04'.
