4L80 or TH400?
Something gave way in the tranny today, either input shaft, pump or converter. Depending on what I find when I pull it out I will be deciding on something stronger than the Level5 4L65 I have now. I am contimplating either a built 4L80 which would be good if I keep the truck a daily driver as it is now or a built TH400. The 400 would make the truck very fun to drive but shifting, no lockup and no overdrive would force me to make the truck a weekend toy and get another dd (thinking 00-04 Tahoe/Yukon). Price is also going to be a deciding factor which I have not looked into yet. Any opinions or suggestions?

I am going with a 4L80E and a Vig 3200 stall... should be fun :)

Could the truck be any faster with the TH400? Is there a difference in gear ratios, weight, HP loss?

4L80E with a shift kit can handle lots of power, and you should be able to do a tranny plus conversion for about the same price as a top of the line 4L60E. My trans has clutches and a shift kit I think, and that's about it. Supposed to be good for 900rwhp.

I'd say go with the 4L80E rather than having to buy something else for a DD. Im pretty sure the gear ratios between the two are exactly the same, except of course no OD with the 400.

The wife and I have been talking about getting an SUV anyway and she really likes her car so a Tahoe/Yukon would work out great for me.
I had briefly though about a T-56 swap as well but figured I would be going thru lots of clutches with the weight of the truck especially when I pully down for more boost. |
I know a guy with a "slightly" modified Tahoe that might sell for the right price. Its an 02.:secret2:

I really dont want another 'project' and you are probablly asking more than I want to spend but PM me some details anyway. ;)

Well if you want to give it some more thought, i may be going back to an automatic, so mine would be up for sale. Everything you need with fresh rebuild, built for 700+ hp. |
I drive my truck back and forth to work as much as I can. Cruises between 2500, 2800rpm....65, 70. Its like having the best of both worlds, shifting without a clutch.
