4L65e Transmission shift question - HELP !!
I am in the middle of a vortec engine swap using a 4L65e. I am trying to build a custom column for the transmission as well.
I selected a 91 silverado column (top of column) married to a 79 jeep bottom column. This gives me a shorter bottom column section, which I needed, and a more modern top with wiper, cruise, turn siginal and headlight dimmer all on one staulk. And, most important, a 4 speed automatic shift gate in the column. Here's the question: When I manualy shift the 4L65e I can count only 6 positions (Park, reverse, neutral, drive, L1 and L2) where is my OD gear and how do I activate it ? I also only count the same 6 detents in the shift gate in the column. Is OD electronic ? I'm, as you can tell, NOT a transmission guy... What am I missing here ????? HELP !!!!:hail::hail::hail: |

Counting from low to O/D place the transmission lever in O/D and then place the shifter in the O/D position and see if your geometry is correct. The biggest reason a tranny doesn't operate properly in a new build is shift lever / shifter position. You might be surprised how many chassis builders and car owners do not get it right with very high end race cars. Feel free to all me if you'd like to discuss it in detail. g |
So...is OD (4th gear) electronic over my "drive" position on my gear selector on the column?
Or should I have 7 detents on the column's shift gate and 7 positions on the transmissions selector shaft ? This is foreign territory for me...:emb: |
Yes you should have 7 positions.
|
rut..ro, I only count 6 positions on the 4L65e shift shaft..
and I only have 6 detents on my 91 silverado column 's shift gate...:bang::bang::bang: |
You're saying that with the linkage disconnected you can only count 6 lever positions at the transmission with the linkage disconnected?

Make sure the trans is in park and the drive shaft will not turn when you are in park. It almost sounds like you are not in park when you are doing this. Don't ask me how I know this but it comes from moving the shifter lever on the trans dynos for way to many years!:sigh:
