Default 4l60e review

Looking for everyone’s honest opinion on the 4l60e. How many miles/km is everyone getting out of theirs? Can they hold more power than stock? Any common problems? Thanks!

They are good yet garbage at the same time, it just all depends on how it's used.

GM built them to last a long while in a daily use application and nobody can say otherwise. It was the main transmission for 15+ years and has been proven to go 100-150k miles on the regular or well higher. Then at the same time they can be a problem but that's with any mass produced product. What did they make like 300,000-500,000 half ton trucks a year?

Google the common problem, they have a ton of them. Clutch failures, drums, slipping etc etc. They can handle more power than stock but generally they do not last because of peoples driving style. The more it is abused the quicker it fails, tons of 3-1 or 4-2 downshifts and things like that will just wear it out and break something. Buying a built 4L60e isn't cheap but doing itself saves money or most just jump ship to the 3x stronger 4L80e and stop caring.

Makes sense, I can see how driving style and preventative maintenance can make a huge difference on the life span of a vehicle. Thanks for the quick reply.

My stock 60e behind my 4.8 with mild bolt ons was perfect. I never had it serviced until I hit 110k. Once I dropped in the first stroker, however, even though I had it beefed up, it bit the dust...twice. Behind a mildly moded stock motors a 60e is pretty solid in my experience but once you start approaching higher HP and torque it just can' take it.
