Default 4:56 in a 05 GMC 1500

I bought a new GMC 1500 5.3 ExtraCab. It come with the performance suspension with a 3:73 posi rear. Also come with the 20" wheels. With these tires (OD 31.9 tall), I need more gear. At 70mph, the tach is reading a mere 1900rpm's. I want to install 4:56 Richmond gears. I hate a motor that lugs while driving around, and I don't care about gas mileage. I now I will need the added rpm's for when I put in a stall converter. I'm thinking of a 3000 stall.

My question is.....what will I also need to do to make the speedo and ABS act right. will a "TUNE" take care of this? The only upgrades I have done so far is added a Flowmaster with dauls.

The tech person at JEGS told me that I could not install a aftermarket gear into my truck because of 4 wheel ABS. WTF.....is this true?

What I want to also add (near future) is long tube headers, no cat pipes, cam, shift kit, stall, and a ATI Procharger

If anyone has done the gear install on an 05, I would like your input please.....

Don't know why the Jegs tech person told you this because it is not true. After a new ring and pinion is installed the computer will need to be reprogrammed for speedo, abs, and other computer function requiring a speed input. I don't know a lot about the aftermarket tuners (HP Tuners seems to be the tuner everyone is using) but the factory Tech II can reprogram the computer for rear ends up to 5.14. A lot of the 1 vehicle use programmers like superchips and hypertech can also reprogram the computer for different gear ratios, and tire sizes.

1. You can put whatever gears you want in there
2. Go 4.10s NOT 4.56 unless you plan on running 35" tires
3. A tune will fix your speedo, even a hypertech or the like will, or the stealership can too

With a 3000 stall I would go with 4.10s but to each his own.

I have a 3000 stall and 4.56's, and I also have a 32" tire. No complaints here at all. I wouldn't have my gears any other way! I don't do hardly any freeway driving, but if you do, then I don't recommend them. I don't recommend Richmond either. Go with some OEM's if you can find them or some Strange/US Gears.

Your ABS and SES light will come on and your speedo will be off. I got about a block away from the gear shop when it lit up like a christmas tree. Your brakes WILL still work, however the ABS won't. The computer is just sensing different wheels speeds between the front and rear based off what its programmed for.

OEM's will cost an arm. You could get an lsd for the same price. Why not Richmonds?

You can score OEM's for cheap some places. Ebay for one. Strange gears don't cost much more than Richmonds....like 20 bones.

Richmonds are terrible from the production standpoint. Sure they might be just as strong, but any good intaller is going to have to spend a lot of time grinding and deburring the Richmonds, because of the way it was produced. The reason behind that is to reduce noise, which they're known for making a lot of. I've heard they're just harder to setup overall, especially when keeping the customers happy.

i found this out the hard way today. my truck does the same thing since the gear change. this car jamed brakes in front of me today so i had to get on the brakes hard and they locked up, luckly i didn't hit the car. i didn't know the light would disable the ABS. i know you can go to the dealership and have it recalibrated to turn the light off but, can they restore the ABS is my ?

When the light is on, the system is disabled. Also, when the computer is programed for the different gear ratio, your abs should work again
