Default 3.42 to 4.10

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 and I currently have 3.42 gears. I want to make the switch to 4.10 gears.

I live in Houston, TX. Can anyone advise me on what all I need to have done and a good place to get the work done at?

Thanks

depend on your mileage if its high. Suggest replace full overhaul kit like bearing, seals, lubes.

Yeah the truck has 128,000 miles. Any ideas on approx cost. Also, will this effect the drive train and/or transmission?

You should make sure an entire overhaul kit is used. It would be foolish to not freshen it all up. I can only assume you are installing gears for towing or hopefully performance? Either one would benefit from a better limited slip then factory and all of the labor is being done so it would be a compleat waste to no install a limited slip or locker.

To do it right and have a shop do the work you are looking at $1000-$1500 depending on what traction controll you go with. If you omit the limited slip(very foolish if you ask me) you might be $800-$1000.

As for effects on the drivetrain it will help out longevity because it will put less stress on the trans and driveshaft. That is under normal driving conditions. Since you will probably be getting on it more I would guess it will be a wash. Easier on the components but your driving will be harder on them alwell.

You'll need your PCM corrected for the change in gear ratios also. Your trans will not shift correctly. Going to a shorter gear, it should short shift if I'm not mistaken.

Guessing that's where I messed up after going from 3.42's to 4.10's and I romped on it withing 30 miles and snapped my output shaft. But OP you'll love it going from 3.42 to 4.10 or at least I do.

Pretty sure Brian lives around the Houston area. He is the "gear man" around here and specializes in these trucks. I would see if he might have some time to do the install for you then you will know its done right. His SN is axisT6 i believe.

X2 on Pyle Bros in Baytown, Tx. The cost is going to be around $1400 installed with tru-trac and 4.10's. I will be going there for my install.

Dang this is great info I appreciate all of it. I for sure want to make sure I do it all while I am doing this so the total overhall is what I will do. I assume if I tell Pyle Brothers that they will understand what I am doing.

The main reason I am doing this is for performance and towing. I don't have a huge boat (16x50x54 Gator Trax with a Mud Buddy Motor but I haul it all over the state and beyond.

I have also be told to consider actually going all the way up to 4.56 since I have a larger 295/70/17 trail grapplers. I was told that with the oversize tires it would be like having 3.73 gears on factory size tires. Any input on going all the way to 4.56?
