Default 10.5 Full Floating 14 Bolt....with 6 lugs

Felt I should put this here.

Some of you are making some very serious power. Sure the 9.5" 14SF is an upgrade, but it is still a C-clip style axle that could be an issue if you snap a shaft.

A full floating axle is one where the axle shaft transmits torque only. The shaft does not support vehicle weight like the semi-floating shafts of the 8.6 and 9.5 do. The full floating feature makes the axle MUCH stronger in regards to power handling.

The 10.5" 14FF is very popular in the offroad world due to having 1.5" shafts, 10.5" ring gear, Removable pinion with a 3rd support bearing, threaded adjusters for setting backlash, and a huge aftermarket. You can also get a complete axle for FREE to $150 if you look hard enough. Weigh difference isn't too much when they are in disk form.

Here is a 6 lug variant that I built:

This kind of shows how big the internals are.

The above pic is upside down, but you can see the 3rd bearing that fully supports the pinion.

Here is another one with wheels on it.

Factory wheels would have to be bored to work.

Cool swap, but you will be so limited on wheel choices.

You are correct, however if someone is going this route, it assumed they have the means of boring the wheels a little bit. I am black steel wheel kind of guy so this isn't really an issue for me.

What all is involved with making one a 6 lug and discs? Will the ABS and parking brake still work? How much less ground clearance would it have compared to an 8.5" 10 bolt or 9.5" 14 bolt? A wheel with a 4.25" center bore would be fine, right?

Any idea of the weight difference between a dressed 9.5" with no brakes and a dressed 10.5" with no brakes?

A lot of guys will shave bottom of the pumpkin, and if you shear an axle your wheels will stay attached. These are a bit heavier than the noncorporate 14 bolts found on gm hd, vans, and tbss; and definately heavier than a 9.5. I think stock these are rated at. 6.5k and semi- float is 5.5k, and not sure about 9.5.

Definitely a trick setup i would want 5 bolt so i can actually put some drag wheels on my ride.
