Fuel emission removal?

Fuel emission removal?
I am changing to a return style setup with a surge tank and im wondering how much of the emissions stuff I can get rid of if any? There is the black box in front of the gas tank that would be a great spot for the surge tank. Anyone know what it is and if I can remove it? Is it somthing like a charcoal canister? Thanks for any help.

I dont want my garage smelling like gas I just cleaned it up enough to park in there again. If I leave everything except the part connected to the fuel rail and manifold and just cap or vent to that line will I still have the gas smell while parked? Thanks for helping.

The fumes have to go somewhere. That black box is a charcoal/filter canister thing that absorbs all the fumes. If you get rid of, there is nothing to filter out the smell. You have to vent the tank somehow also, or you wont be able to fill it up.
I deal with the gas smell on mine since I put a filter on a hose and ran it up by the gas door. Its not that bad.
