I tried every other oil under the sun but they all broke down within 500 miles or so due to the heat (from not having an oil cooler). The 20w50 didnt break down and supposedly the higher zinc content is beneficial.
How are you determining that an oil has broken down?

To contribute to this thread, as per my engine builder I ran VR1 20w50 for two oil changes. Now I use Rotella T6 5w40 and add Lucas zinc-plus

the oil pressure would drop after a couple hundred miles, along with becoming very dark colored.

For $28 you can send in your oil to get tested by BlackStone Labs.

Might be worth it to actually figure out what the oil doing and how long of life is really left in it.

As for my pile, just normal dexos synthetic 5W30 from napa.

I love Brad Penn, used it in my evo.

Is 20w50 too thick for a low mileage stock bearing engine with a turbo?

Totally sarcasm.
And hell, if you change it every 3,000-5,000 miles you are not likely to have sludge buildup. I have never seen sludge in either of my Firebird engines which were always changed at 5,000ish miles or this truck which gets changed every 5,000-8,000 miles....and I bought the truck with 154,000 miles in it....
I use whatever conventional or synthetic blend is on sale in 10w-40.

5w30 Mobil 1 with about 2x quarts of Lucas oil stabilizer........I don’t like dry starts and my truck tends to sit quite a bit........... it could sit for 3 months and get fired up and not make a peep

Isn't that the stuff that pours like STP? If so, it seems like it would increase the time it takes oil to reach the far reaches of the system on start up. I think it would be good for the main and rod bearings, but I wonder about the rocker bearings and lifter internals.
