Tractor/truck Turbo.....anyone done this?
 

wondering if anyone has used a tractor or truck turbo on a front mount kit. Dont want to screw up a brand new t76 on my first turbo project. im in the middle of south dakota so agriculture is big, and there should be an abbundance of them. If anyone has info, post up the model of the turbo and what it came off of. ex. 70mm turbo off a John Deere 4020. Thanks.:headbang:

I read 2:1 for gas to diesel in displacement, so look for a 12L tractor?

I am trying to go this route too, find a usable cheap turbo core to work from.

problem with alot of diesel turbos is that they have large turbines compared to the compressor. That is because lots of them dont use wastegates and are designed to operate in a narrow RPM band. If you get lucky you'll get one that has a common turbine wheel (p or q trim) and you'll be able to find a smaller housing for it. If you find one, post it up and I will tell what I can about it :)

what is that holset compareable to? like a 70mm or what?

Holset HX50 67mm Comp / 77mm Turbine.
Holset Hx52 67mm Comp/ 72mm Turbine.
Holset HX55 72mm Comp / 77mm Turbine.

I have seen it done on a 88 Mustang in New Hampshire. The thing has run in the 10's for over a year. It is a small turbo off of a Deere.

No offence, but half assing a turbo setup is a bad idea. Using a used "tractor" turbo sounds like a future of pulling turbine blades out of the top of your pistons when the antique grenades on you....if your gona go turbo why not buy some good components from the get go so you arent kicking yourself later?????

I think agricultural stuff is pretty tuff, and you would not just throw it on, you would clean and inspect it...b/c you might be swapping a housing to get the turbo to make power higher in the RPM band..."a diesel stops making power where the gas engine just starts making it"

and in my project...a rat...it would look a little out of place having this 'new' turbo in the engine compartment.

I think you are reading the intention of the post wrong. There is nothing "half-assed" about using a diesel turbo or one from a tractor. Turbos have been innovated by the diesel/industrial area. Honeywell, Holset, and Borg Warner aren't turbos i would call "antique grenades". Just like with anything it takes research. Holsets have been used by the BMW, Datsun 240z's, Chrysler, DSM and VW crowd for a very long time with awesome results as everyone has reported better spool up than a "Good" turbo and a rediculious top end. Don't be so skeptical.
