Default 5.3 rear mount turbo

The victim is a 09 5.3 with sts rear mount turbo has 50 lb injectors upgraded fuel pump and is on 7.5 boost at the moment. Dyno at 397rw hp 567 ft lb tq. Turbo is bb and has capability to make 15 lbs ... So they say I have not tried on stock internals. I have seen a few " budget builds" that have made good numbers from a junk yard motor and chinease turbos ect.... The builds I've seen seem to fib a bit. They make power but they use special heads that they just had laying around and others use ls6 cams that they got for 199 but as of yet I have not seen it. Headers are a great way to get more but for a rear mount system it lets te heat go and reduces the velocity needed to spool up. Anyone can play the I have money game buy expensive parts and make power. How would you realistically add power to this truck with parts / prices that are actually correct? I have seen some that change the map sensor. What options/ recommendations do y'all have? My hopes are forged rod pistons and ls6 cam/spring along with dod delete.run 13 to 14 lbs boost, Any of you guys have rear mount turbo experience?

First off the stock 5.3 is strong enough to hold more power than your turbo can make. Don't waste money on forged rods and pistons. The 09 5.3s have 243/799 heads that flow very well as they are and come with a bigger intake manifold. Throw a zr1 cam in it dod delete and gut the cats. Add some meth or e85 get a good tune and turn the boost up to 15#

As mentioned you should remove the cats or hollow them out. I would suggest an isky 212 boost cam. A custom tune if you haven't got one. Turn up the boost and let her rip! These motors can take a ton of abuse and keep on rolling. A stall would also be a great idea in order to stay in the boost a bit more.

Sts is really secretive about the actual turbo specs.... They really aren't to clear about it. Mine is supposed to be upgraded from the stock set up. Definitely has issues keeping boost. I'm looking at tq converters right ow but I am unsure about what brand and stall I should aim for. My truck was dyno tuned because sts does not tune vehicles. They sell you a tune and a tuner that dumps fuel into the system bad enough to black smoke like a diesel... You drive around for days testing it and have spent just as much as you would for a custom dyno tune.... You can make your own decision but it is what it is. I'm upgrading from the turbo smart 38 mm to a 44 tiel. I've checked all 27 clam connections on this system and have no leaks.

It's most likely a gt67 that's what my buddy's had and he made 507 on 12 psi cam only 6.0 but the turbo chokes up top big time.

sts sucks, rear mounts in general suck. Now with that said, I think you are over thinking it really. Just turn it up and have a good tuner tune it. You'll go through the trans before you hurt the motor

I ran the times in my sig with an sts GT67 on my 07 Z71 with 5.3, walbro 255, built 4l60, PI 3k stall on 275/55/20's. Billy at the old TRT turbo shop did it for me. It had 7.4x's in it but that was the only pass I got to make that night. Without front end straps it was literally hopping like a bronco but still cut a 1.695 60. I had a 02-04 ZO6 cam, patriot golds and all pipes wrapped, 4.10's and eaton posi. It made about 8.5-9lbs on that pass. I only went sts to stay emmisions legal. I even had the factory catted y. I would recommend a cam and springs and call it good on the engine probably. The tranny is a different story. A loose converter is a MUST with an sts. I ran vettes, mustangs, camaros, trans ams, upgraded srt4 neon, a BMW M3 v8 and killed them all. Almost ran over the BMW. A Gxr 1000 murdered me on the highway but I still had to just for grins! Everyone knows the merits of a front mount but again I did it to stay legal for state inspection. It was a fun time. You could look through my old threads if you like. Best of luck to you!
