Procharger w/wastegate article in GMHTP

GM High-Tech Performance magazine has an article this month where Joe Borschke, a Troy, MI Tuner, used a Tial 44mm wastegate to limit the boost on a D-1SC equipted 2010 LS3 Camaro. He plumbed the Tial between the D-1SC and the FMIC and reduced the pulley from a 4.75" to a 4.0" and pick up 60+ ft lbs of torque under the curve.

You'll have to pick up a copy to actually read the article but I added some scans below. IMO, GMHTM is the best magazine out there on forced induction LSx motors so you should all be subscribing to it. :D

Thanks for posting that up, really interesting!

I've been waiting to see one of the centrifugal guys do this...

Got that issue on the back of the shitter.

That's pretty sweet

Not the first time this has been done. Theres a guy over on ls1 tech thats got one on his procharged vette, but its defiantly a cool idea.

Subscribed to the magazine a few years back def the best GM magazine out there!

Damn and to think if I would have got off my ass I might have been able to be in the mag :( I still have the damn thing sitting some where :jest:

I've heard its harder on the blower's transmission. Also been told that a restrictor on the blower inlet is better for this (at lower blower speeds its less of a restriction, and more up top). There is a shop that has one that has opens up differently for different boost levels (like per gear).

There is more then one way to look at that restrictor plate idea.. It can also cause alot of heat. Both ways is going to make the blower work harder..

Supercharged Cobalts have something like this from the factory. The ECM controls the internal bypass valve to provide more boost on the bottom and bleed off some boost at the top. One can assume those blowers are also 'working harder' but they are covered by a warranty for like 100,000 miles. Probably not making it work hard enough to cause damage within any kind of reasonable blower lifetime.

Kinda confused on this... Are they using the Tial WG instead of the Procharger BOV?

TimDave217 11-02-2011 07:28 PM

I was always curious if this would be plausible, guess i won the bet with myself/ seems a few on here are gonna be quick to jump on a little project here soon and try this out!

They are using both. The bypass still stays open while driving normal.. It still closes under boost. The waste gate will allow the use of a smaller pulley to make more max boost while the gate will limit it to how much you actually want to run.. A smaller pulley will allow it to boost harder sooner, then open when you reach the set point.. :D

Gotcha, makes sense to me! Pretty neat idea.

I thought about that while I was reading the article. I remember you picking up something like this a while back and figured it just got puched to the back of the shelf in the garage...

The article mentions that running any smaller of a pulley caused the FMIC to overheat which really means the IAT's climbed too high. I was klind of surprised that they had an issue. I could see that a restrictor is choking off the blower so it's working harder to build boost. I would have thought that since the wastegate opening up bleeds off the boost, the load would be reduced on the blower.

thats pretty cool. Ive heard of guys using wastegates on blower setups for more bottom end, but hadnt heard how they were doing it.

So you could hook up a boost controller to the gate and set your boost per gear.

I just got around to reading this issue of GMHTP.
I know of a couple of local shops that have done this with great success on both a Camaro and a Mustang.
The shop in the article prefers to run the WG between head unit and FMIC...which is where I have my PC race by-pass...guess I would just relocate it post FMIC.
Thinking of going w/ SD tune...guess I could locate it where I have the MAF since I've already relocated the IAT sensor.
