oil temp for turbo guys
 
How many of you guys with oil-cooled turbos (the majority, I suspect) have actually measured your oil temps with a sensor? I added this on my latest build just for shits and giggles, and just putting around (less than 20% throttle) with engine coolant temps around 170, never going into boost, the sensor showed temps creeping up to near 250F within 15 minutes. This is with very light driving, and really makes me wonder what I would reach if I was actually driving somewhat spirited. I already bought a 15000btu cooler to use, but I havent heard much discussion of this considering the importantance of oil temp.

I suspect most guys assume that is fine and not really a concern, but never really bother to check...

were are you getting your measurement from. Oil line going to turbo, after turbo, in the pan etc.
Be interested in seeing the difference, turbo, NA, and blower.

Near the oil filter, input side. I feel this spot gives a good average temp, since it would be cooler in the pan and obviously hotter right off the turbo.

I would be interested in that difference too...

More info on my setup: -4an turbo feed, no restrictor, -10an and 1/2npt drain to the oil pan, HO melling oil pump (low pressure spring), 10w30 oil.

I've got a heat gun in my truck. I could hit my oil filter just to see what it says.

I got 150 at the filter & Block temp was 200. Also checked a couple of our rig engines the most I could get was 200 hitting the filters & 219 on the block.

When I was in NASCAR, we always watched oil temps. They were always at least 20-30* hotter then water and that's with coolers and everything. 250* oil was never a problem. we wouldn't even start a motor until the oils was pre-heated to 180-200*, lol With no oil cooler, I wouldn't worry to much about that hot of oil. 280* and I'd start doing something about it.

Oh and we always measured the oil after the cooler at the remote oil filter just before it was fed into the motor. These were 800hp NA motors though with dry sump 3 gal systems ;)

My last job in NASCAR was with Joe Gibbs Racing as a chassis engineer and car chief for there truck/bush car program that Coy Gibbs (Joe's youngest son) was driving at the time.
