New intercooler and tailpipe!

8 Attachment(s)
I already knew my intercooler was too small, but I didnt realize how much until my trip to the dyno last week when I was seeing about a 50% loss through the intercooler, which is completely unacceptable. I bought a CXRacing 36x12x4 but it wouldnt be here until this Monday. Well it arrived yesterday and I spent yesterday and this morning putting it in.

Even though they say its 12" high, its actually 13" (15" with the tabs), which required me to cut out out the bottom of the front of the radiator support. It is also twice as heavy as my ebay 3.5" intercooler (30lbs vs 15lbs) and about 6" wider. I welded a piece of steel I drilled to the frame rails so I had something to mount the bottom to. The inlets required some more cutting of the plastic around the headlights and I had to modify the passenger side high beam bulb so I could turn it 90degrees. To make it more fun I had to modify the bumper as well and the bumper brackets on the frame. It looks like the previous owner taped something because the passenger side is 1" closer to the truck than the drive side...

Overall it looks and feels like a much higher quality cooler than the ebay one, and actually wasnt that expensive at $260 (vs $150 for the ebay one). I havent tested it yet, but im hopeful!

Good pic of how I have my trans cooler and oil cooler...

Heres my old one for comparison

Also after melting a strap on the dyno and already melting through the ebrake cable plastic I needed to make a tailpipe to go over the axle...

I had a 4" mandrel bend 180deg piece I wasnt using so I cut it in half and made it into an S shape and make the cuts so it points slightly down after the axle. Im not going to win any welding contests but it should do the job.

That new I/C looks like a nice piece! I'm looking forward to your new and improved dyno numbers!

nonnieselman 05-22-2012 03:25 PM

So when is the next dyno day?
This should be interesting!

o2camaross 05-22-2012 04:26 PM

Im running one on my truck too. It came out of a burnt up 02 camaro that made 800rwhp so we should be good lol

pewterliftedz 05-22-2012 04:36 PM

dam your shocks are at a crazy angle rich... That intercooler looks beast, can't wait for results..

o2camaross 05-22-2012 04:38 PM

also, what is the little black cooler that you are running? I know the bigger one has to be tranny.

Atomic 05-22-2012 04:38 PM

Shocks are at the normal angle but I ordered parts to move them both. Dunno when I'm.going.back to the dyno...

The black cooler is my engine oil cooler.

o2camaross 05-22-2012 04:41 PM

oh cool! What all did you have to do to run that?

TURBHOE 05-22-2012 04:56 PM

have you driven it yet, atomic? feel any different?

Atomic 05-22-2012 06:16 PM

Nope havent driven it yet...I was going to wait until night time so I have some cooler air and less cars on the road.

For the oil cooler I needed the cooler, -8 lines, misc fittings, and a oil block thing I found on ebay that has the cooler ports and 3 others that I use to monitor the temp and feed the turbo.

03sierraslt 05-23-2012 07:22 PM

Well? Did you drive it yet?
You can see the difference in the cores, your new intercooler appears to have a core similar to what I had with my old setup. Did you look inside and compare as well?

Atomic 05-23-2012 07:45 PM

The inside is more dense as well.

I drove it last night, and im not sure exactly what it is between the better intercooler, bigger compressor wheel, and more timing but the truck feels strong as hell. I did a quick test and saw less of a temp rise but it wasn't a fair test, in favor of the previous cooler, granted. I haven't measured pressure drop yet.

smokeshow 05-23-2012 07:58 PM

That intercooler and compressor are going to drop temps. I'll bet you're seeing more power from both.

03sierraslt 05-23-2012 08:01 PM

how much more timing?

TIM Z 05-23-2012 08:17 PM

That is a damn nice piece , especially for the money!

Tailpipe looks good too, any drone with bieng dumped under the bed?

Isnt it awesome when you change stuff and you actually feel power on the butt dyno?!!!

I too had to cut thru my front headlight supports to mount and run cooling lines for my HEX, kinda surpriseing all that plastic up there huh:shrug:

I wanna ride man!

moregrip 05-23-2012 08:54 PM

that's all intercooler baby!

Spoolin 05-23-2012 10:17 PM

I think the white power of that truck is finally shinning! Wash it and I bet you it will go even faster!

Atomic 05-23-2012 10:57 PM

I think its actually quieter with the tailpipe than it was with it point straight back...

I have it set for about 15 degrees at WOT, so 4 more degrees than I was using.

03sierraslt 05-24-2012 03:46 AM

Well 4 degrees more timing should be noticable. Good deal man.

o2camaross 05-24-2012 08:01 AM

Yea that extra 4 degrees should be very noticable. If sure the cooler IAT's are helping a lot too. When we were tuning mine we set the timing to16 degrees across the board and thats where it is at now, but one run idk what happened and It jumped to 22 degrees! It got straight sideways at 70! Makes me really want to run a meth kit so I can turn up the timing a little lol. Anyways glad its working good for you buddy!

atomic...is that the 28 or 34” radiator?

Atomic 02-11-2019 10:28 PM
