Default Low 12 second truck. Duramax or 6.0 Lq9/6.2 L94?

Hey guys, so I'm coming from the diesel world so I know all about what it takes to push a crew cab 3/4 ton to low 12s and it ain't cheap. 20k for a Duramax engine build, 6k for a trans, 2k for injectors, 4k for turbo system ect ect. 750hp or so. Everything is top dollar.

Now to build a forged gen 3 or gen 4 LS and do something like an On3 turbo kit and built 4l80 or 6l80 has got to be significantly less right? But I don't know quite how much power I'll need or if that much boost on top of an LS will be daily drivable in -30* Winters and 90* summers.

Now I know the modern Gen 5 LT 6.2 and 8 speed combo is a potent engine and I've seen a twin turbo stock trans crew cab run a low 11. Significantly lower investment than a diesel but the modern trucks are still too new and way too much money for a 6.2. But will the older Lq9/L94 return similar results?

Looking at doing this to an 06-09 Sierra Denali or Silverado with the Vortec Max Lq9 and maybe a 6.2 L94 if I can find one for the right price. And that'd be vs a 3/4 ton LBZ 06-07 Duramax.

Thanks for your insight guys.

You could get into the 12's with a 6.2 crew cab truck with a blower or a turbo fairly easily. Anything older has all the potential that the 6.2 does, and more ultimately if its a later iron block, but it will take more modification to get there.

A 6.2 with a blower only at 8 PSI should run 12's. Same would be said about a turbo. If its a daily driver I would lean toward something like a Borg Warner that was also made for OEM and has great track record for longevity.

Yup, what he said.

Even in the 06-09 year ranges you don't even need forged parts to get you there. The later GEN 3 (05+) and all GEN 4 motors have very strong H beam rods that could support 800+ horsepower if you want them too.

Look into a trick turbo kit of KB racing kit, On3 will be a waste of your money and time.

I get 2-3 emails a month from guys who bought on3 kits, looking to replace them for various reasons. And there is no BW turbo that will bolt to them without modification. Just FYI

Let’s look at it this way. The ON3 kits are Cheap! And you get what you pay for. I would look into a trick kit, KBRacing, Spike perf. To name a few.

I would rather spend more money on a quality kit once then buy a cheap kit 2x over.

I haven't seen anyone post up install pics with the new On3 stuff since they redesigned the truck log manifold but the rest of the kit seems to have gremlins. Other parts like said above don't just bolt on and the quality of the metal used is cheaper.

Not to derail the thread but I'd love to see if someone has bought the hooker turbo header and log manifold. Heck even more picture of the Huron speed kits, those guys do great stuff with the cars.

My boy just installed an ON3 kit less then 3x months ago and has had nothing but problems with it. I know that within 50 miles the crossover flex pipe blew apart, so what’s that tell you for “quality”

I am seriously interested in the Huron Speed kit for my new build. Only reason I am skeptical is that I have not seen any real world reviews yet (like Trick and KB have).
The price is tempting though.
