I would try to get it to behind the headlight like stock, the inner fender is where the stock airbox pulls from but the hole is probably not big or round enough

Works even better if you take out that metal plate that the factory airbox attaches to. I wouldnt recommend taking out that plate if you go offroad, however.

You could get even fancier and add another bend and piece of pipe to point the filter down lower towards the front bumper corner.

I believe foose04's is routed this way. Search his name for pictures. I also plan on doing the same myself.

I don't know how much its gonna help my iats but I'm building a custom sheetmetal scoop from my factory fog light holes to the bottom side of my airfilter in the stock location. Only thing that's holding me back from finishing is my welder broke down.

Install stock or aftermarket air box. Route inlet from turbo to air box. You can cut a hole in the air box in the front to match the area behind the head light. And/or cut the front bottom area out and route another duct down inside the front inner fender.
Or
even install the air filter there like we did here a few years back. Took the stock mounting plate. Cut a 4" hole and routed tubing to the new filter location.
