How does Meth injection function?

I know it cools the intake charge and such, But what activates it? is it run off of intake temp? boost level? I mean, If its 10 degrees outside, you really shouldnt need it as opposed to it being 90 degrees. So how does it really work? Im considering an install, But its dang expensive. THanks

Methanol is sprayed into your intake plumbing, normally during boosted conditions. When alcohol is atomized, it goes through a phase change absorbing heat from the intake air. Put some germ killer on your hand and wave it as fast as you can. You hand will get really cold. You'll look like an idiot but this is ultimately what is happening. Water/meth injection is nearly always boost activated (via a hobbs switch or fancy boost controller) because this is when you have this highest intake temps. Even if it is 10 degrees outside you will still have elevated intake temps.

Yeah i understand alcohol is cold and compressed rushing air gets hot. Im just trying to decide if its worth it to put on my Daily driver when i up it to 10-11 psi. Summers are dang hot around here. But the winters are cold. I dont race, just like the feel of power. And i like gettin the rear a little loose here and there. Truck gets drivin the hardest when passing people and merging on a highway, Which can be equivelent to a 1/4 mile drag run. How long does meth actually last and stuff like that?

Im seriously considering going ahead and jumping on the meth wagon. Im only at 7.5 psi now. But i was going to bump up to 10.5, no meth. BUt now im thinking about meth, and 11.5 psi. Motor has 160k on it though. But all new valve train, valve job. Oil pump, and timing set. But original stock bottom end.

I think it really depends on what IATs you are seeing when WOT at the boost you are making.

i think its a good idea, if its not used for racing i might have the meth come after 5psi of boost just to not waste so much, just remember heat is the enemy of our parts

Its just a better fuel for the extreme cyl pressures you see with increased boost.

It has worked well for me.

will the motor last with 160k on the bottom end and 11 psi on meth? I dont wanna blow it up yet. i need at least another year out of it. But man i like to feel the power.

it should...it's all in the tune

It will most likely last longer with meth than without it. I have a 2000 Silverado that had had a blower and meth on it for 90k of it's 150k miles. Still going strong.
