A2W intercooler water lines
im trying to decide which way would be best to run the water lines for my intercooler setup, these are basically the two ways that ive figured so far...
the first way is to run the water from the intercoolers straight thru the heat exchanger right when the water would be the hottest. then run it thru the water/ice box so it would be able to cool off even more then back into the intercoolers. y thinking behind this is so when im at the track and put ice in the box it would cool the water off well below ambient right before it went thru the intercoolers instead of then going theu the heat exchanger which would, possibly, actually heat the water back up instead of cooling it off more. make sense? http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...g/IMG_0258.jpg the second way is to go from the intercoolers straight to the water box then thru the heat exchanger right before it goes back thru the intercoolers... http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/p...g/IMG_0257.jpg so which way do you guys think would be best? thanks! |
the 2nd way , even though once it start circulating it will get heated reguardless. but through the ice box then straight to the i/c is best. the bigger the reservoir the better . i had a 3 gallon on my vortech setup and by the time i would get to the line it was heating up and by the end of the run it was melted completely . this time im going for a 7-10 gallon ice box.

uhh, do i not understand what you said or did you explain it like the first way?
|
i said to run it through the ice box then the intercooler, running it through the pump in between will heat it up as well. more capacity is a +
|
the pump would have to go after the water box tho right? it wouldnt pump the water thru the box since its vented... or am i thinking wrong?
|
if the pick up line in the box is submerged it will pump fine . your over thinking the whole thing.
|
should be a closed no air system so pump placement shouldnt matter i wouldnt think. like he said pump will heat it up a little so IC, pump, Hx, Ice box 2 IC would be the prefered method wouldnt it not..?
|
ok, now that i think about it more i guess it doesnt matter...
thats what im thinking skolman, basically same idea as my first drawing but with the pump after the IC instead of before it |
I agree. You want the coldest water going straight into the intercooler. Be sure to mount the pump low, to prevent cavitating.

Pumps not gonna heat the water by any measurable amount, its a low/no pressure system and it's only a centrifugal pump, just moving water, not compressing it.
Ice/water box > pump > intercooler > heat exchanger > back to ice box. IN fact, I'd even by pass the heat exchanger when at the track, it's probably gonna add heat to the system if your running ice. That's how I did it when I was A/W with the compound setup and the turbo and the Maggie. |
