5.3 turbo selection!!!
 
Ok guys I already purchased a VS racing billet 7875 with plans of around 600hp with a budget build 5.3. I am now having second thoughts as I already purchased supporting parts such as 4l80e and circle d 258mm billet single disk. I spoke with VS and they will return the turbo for exchange but am undecided on what would be best. Truck will be 99% street driven toy. I'd like room to make 8-900hp and not be a complete dog on the bottom end. Was going to go s480 billet with t6 1.32ar but then I saw they off the same turbo in a t4 1.10ar. Would this meet my goals of 8-900hp and would it spool better then the t6 1.32? I still want it to be kind of budget as I dont want to spend 1k plus on the turbo. Let me know your thoughts and experiences to help me make my decision. Still haven't purchased my cam but will spec one to help build boost quicker. This will be on e85

You won't even be able to plant 800-900hp on the street, so is a larger turbo on a small displacement engine the best way to go?

To me the larger turbo needs more cubic inches to help it not lag and spool much quicker.

An S480/96 T6 1.32 will take for ever to spool on a 5.3 and be very lazy at 600hp. Droppping it down to a 1.1 T4 will help but a 96mm turbine is still too much turbine for a 5.3 IMO.

The one I am talking about is 83x75 turbine. I know it wont plant and have been torn on this decision as I think the 7875 will feel faster on the street due to a quick spool time. I just would like to have some headroom to make more power over the 7875 without breaking the bank.

I'd even be open to thoughts of s475 with 83 turbine 1.10ar t4.

Do you want something you can drive and have fun with or a smoke show at a redlight?

Stick with the 7875. Oversizing a turbo happens about about as often as overcamming a motor.

Thanks for the help guys 7875 it will be. I am my own worst enemy at times. Bigger is not always better. Not to figure out the cam. Any suggestions? Was originally looking at the sloppy stage 2 to keep it budget.

Even a 76/75 gen 2 BMF billet is rated at 1100hp. I had a Borg Warner 369sxe and that was small but still made good power and spooled quick. Even with the largeet exhaust housing I had back pressure issues. The issue I see is just about every post is turbo is slow to boost, The issue is really spec the turbo for the power but also knowing how to drive. Once the stall is matched up with the spool rpms. It is only off the line a turbo can feel slow to boost. And there are ways around that 2step, trans brake, even foot brake. And if you roll race you can manually shift or roll boost. A bigger power turbo truck may like the "big" turbo down low if your blowing the tires off.
Wide and tall with lots of side wall on the tires and a matching gear. We see over 1000hp trucks street racing all the time. and a few street tire 700hp truck around.
I have 24" wheels but they are 33 tall and over 12 wide. It blows the tires off at 2000rpm to 3200rpm but then goes. That is full air with no heat in them. Not bad. I can dial it in this summer.
So keep that turbo. or go bigger and add nitrous! HAHA

I can't keep 650 planted no way your gonna get 900 down on a DD. Just keep goals realalistic and go with what will hook up, it will be faster and not so hard on shit...
