The 160* Thermostat Thread

How many of you guys are using this and do you think its a necessity to have on a turbo application? What are the benefits?

Byrdman11 11-17-2012 06:13 PM

Well I like it, runs a little cooler at the track for me. You are going to hear the LS engine post to run hotter. Dyno shows me I said me difference. Cooler was better.

Im also wondering it it is necessary to put a 160 in.

HIPSI 11-17-2012 07:41 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong temp will still be the same it will just take it longer to get there?

Byrdman11 11-17-2012 08:01 PM

160 stat means it will be fully open at 160 and if the cooler system and fans can keep it there it will run 160. But my truck will 175 if I let the fans run more. Like I do at the track.

Whats the factory one open at? 190? Seems like its really close to 200 on the gauge when fully at operation temp.

HIPSI 11-17-2012 08:27 PM

So I assume you can run a little more timing with colder engine temp?

patofdzb 11-17-2012 09:10 PM

ive heard if you run a 160 t stat that it should be mentioned to your tuner. is that correct?

Byrdman11 11-17-2012 09:15 PM

Yes, the cooler temp help with spark knock.

Yes that is correct, really you need e-fans to take advantage of the lower temp t-stat. Tuner will have to adjust fan on and off speeds, tweek timing, etc.
