I have two ?s #1 What year model truck has this problem been more frequent on? #2 Does anybody known if they are running heavier oil than recommended? I ask because on the 2003 Rams w/the 5.7 there is a technical service bulletin for the oil pick up tube saying that some owners my experience a low oil pressure light on cold days. The tsb says to fix the problem w/the pick up tube to replace it I'm wondering if they are running heavier oils and the pick up tube is bad is there the possibility that the extra harmonics could be coming from a lack of oil.

Ram Head the problems with the toner ring imploding has "mostly" been attributed to use of an underdrive pulley and/or increased rev limits using the handheld programmers. There might be a very slim-to-none chance of a totally stock engine grenading the ring ( the low oil could cause some problems ) but overall the failures are pointing to specific aftermarket mods.
Failures are mostly occuring on 03 and 04 vehicles.
