what year were changes made

im thinking of selling my trans am and buying a dodge cummins but know only a littel about them. For example the f-bodys got ls6 intakes in 01 better blocks in 98 better rod bolts throughout the years ect ect and the 4l60e sucks and the 10 bolt. could someone tell me what years changes were made on the cummins. why were their 24v and 12v. when did power increase. Does one year have a better rearend ect. Why was their a 5spd and 6spd. Is one stronger. Thanks!

89-91= 12V non intercooled rotary pump
92-93= 12V intercooled rotary pump
94-98= 12V intercooled P-Pump
98.5-02= 24V intercooled VP44 pump
03-07= 24V intercooled Common Rail pump
07.5+= 24V 6.7L intercooled common rail pump, emissions

01.5+ Dodges came with disc brakes in the rear
P-Pump trucks have proven to be the big power houses, but the Common Rail trucks are catching up and will soon pass.
VP44 trucks have had issues with lift pump failures, leading to injection pump failures, right now only about 800HP is achievable on diesel only
Rotary pump trucks are reliable but not big on power
Automatic trucks and 5 speeds and considered SO (standard output) trucks and are typically 15-25hp less than the 6 speed trucks HO (high output). In the VP44 trucks, it is due to a different injection pump, however the SO pumps will flow more fuel than the HO when you start modding them.

Does any one else have any good info like this. I am most likley selling my truck to get somthing that will hold up to my size 14 foot. I have been thing alot of a cummins my self so any help would be great. I do know in the 03+ which is what im looking at the front axle is as good as a dana 60, and the rear is as good as a dana 70 or 80.

All 4WD's from Dodge come with the Dana 60/70 setup. The duallys come with a Dana 80 out back. The 2WDs come with a Dana 60 out back.
Only issues is the 98.5-02 4WD's have a problem with front axle inner seals going bad- and they are a mutha to fix

The 4x4 CTD 5 speed trucks came with the dana 80 hybrid, which I believe is the 80 center section, 80 axle shafts and 70 axle tubes. Correct me if I am wrong!

The '03+ trucks got the AAM 9.25 axle up front. The '03-early '04 2500s with the auto trans and the SO engine got the AAM 10.50 rear. All '03+ 3500s and 2500 manuals got the AAM 11.50 rear. The 11.50 rear is the same as the one in the '01+ Duramax trucks but the Dodge version has 14" brake rotors and a Torsen style limited slip diff. All '03+ 2500s and 3500s with 4WD came with either the NV271(manual shift) or the NV273(electric shift) transfer case. The electric shift 4WD system on the Dodge trucks isn't as problematic as the Ford system is. From '03 to early '04, there were three different versions of the Cummins available. 235hp(California, Maine, and Massachusetts only), 250hp, and 305hp. The 305hp engine was only available with the NV5600 6 speed manual trans until January '03 when the 48RE auto trans came out. '04.5 is when the 325hp engine became available and you could only get either the 48RE auto or NV5600 manual trans until the middle of the '05 model year when the G56 trans came out. The way to spot the NV5600 is like this: Reverse is located just to the right of 5th gear(same shift pattern as the T56 in the 4th gen F Body). The G56 has reverse just to the left of second gear and 1st gear is marked with the letter L(L,2,3,4,5,6).

well i ended up buying a 94 dodge 2500 4x4 v10 which i love, but for further questions i found a 92 dodge cummins five speed dually. What is exactly different with the motor and gear box. i know its a different gear box but is it on a different bellshousing. Or has the bellhousing stayed the same from89-to now. Is the rotory pump and boost the only things that make it put out less power. Is it the same 12valve as 94-98.5 with a different turbo or was it totally redone through the years. Looking for info as i might buy the truck to tinker with.
