It is in the fuel system and the way it fires. Add a quart of 2 stroke oil(NON SYNTHETIC) to about every 20 gallons of fuel, it will take some noise out. No really it will.

So im reading the noise is from the injectors and combustion chambers not the vlv train? Wow. Maybe an upgrade to late model injection would quite it but too expensive to be worth while. Ya know someone should be able to upgrade the injection sys if it is more efficient, uses less fuel and makes more power which im guessing the modern electronics do.

I used to add the cummings branded fuel additive but no longer available so now i use the "Diesel Fuel" add in the white bottles. 255,000 mi no fuel problems - knock on wood.

Like I said 2 stroke will help. You would have more money then it's worth to do a fuel system.

Higher injection pressures and up to 7 shots vs 1 in a single injection event make it quiet. Along with 500 lbs of emissions jumk

Just sounds like quite a normal non quIET CumminGs issue

They're noisy, best way to fix it is to get a different truck.

I used to run 2-stroke oil in my old 6.2L diesel too (TC-W3 low smoke) and the whole engine would sound a lot less "rattly" within a few seconds or minutes of driving.

I never calculated how much I used, but I would just throw in a 1/3 or 1/2 of a bottle (1qt bottle) for every half tank, but I was running a K5, which has a slightly smaller gas tank than a truck would.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

As for making the engine quieter, it won't happen. Those 12V (and even the early 24V's) engines are some of the noisiest engines ever put in a passenger vehicle. You could try adding some sound deadening/heat resistant panels to the hood, but that probably won't do much at all.

I once wanted to do that to the hood of my K5, but forgot how essential that engine heat is to melting ice off the hood in the winter LOL

Well im tempted to try wrapping up the fuel injectors, tubing and maybe the BOSCH hi pressure fuel pump too with some type of insulation. From what im reading thats where most of the noise is coming from.
BTW its been 130k mi since last vlv adj so im scheduled for this next week. Maybe that will help with the noise.
