Default 05 2500 Cummins, need better gas milage

Ok everyone, I need to get beeter gas milage on my 05 2500 cummins tow truck. I get around 18 mpg driving to & from work. She is stock except for bigger tires. I change the oil & filter every 5,000 mile & the fuel filter every 10,000 miles. I keep the tranny fluid changed every 30,000 miles.

What can I do? I dont want to spend to much money on her because all my money goes into my race car(see sig below). Can I have someone tune her for better gas milage? Do I need to do exhust? Air dam kit?

Hack the exhaust.
The more she can breathe the more power you will have.
And get a Smarty or BullyDog.

Free flowing muffler.

Mileage can be helped with a box or tuner that advances timing. Smarty seems to be the best.

+1 on the Smarty, when I had my 05 Dodge I ran the Smarty on Number 9 with an AEM Brute Force HD and a MBRP dual exhaust. I saw around 19-20 on the highway at 65mph with no problems.

Hello. I thought i'd jump in here. Its my first time on the forum. I have the same predicament as the OP. I know N O T H I N G about diesels, save for a couple basics. DO the same rules apply to diesels as to gas-powered cars: more air = more efficiency? So a Muffler, a box-tuner, and an Intake should up my MPG on my 06 5.9L Cummins...

Yea, but the biggest mileage gain will come from the box that advances the timing. Pressure boxes add the HP, but don't give you hardly any mileage increase.

My XZT box saw little increase in mileage, however, I did see 1 mpg increase when I started using synthetic oil.

For better mileage install an air intake system, exhaust system, and a programer. I'd recommend AFE on the intake, Magnaflow on the exhaust, and
the hypertech max or pro comp power pro on the programer. When all three are installed you should see a nice inprovement on your mileage.

Its an 05' with a cat so just strait pipe it, they gont get that loud and sound pretty good. Also look into the Quadzilla tuner, they are great for increasing mpg's if you can keep your foot out of it. As for an intake, just get a high flow drop in filter. There isnt really much gain in the high dollar kits unless your trying to make more power in the higher rpms with a tuner. You just want economy so save that money.
